Taiwan Targets Domestic Quantum Computer by 2027

Supply chain and quantum cybersecurity bolster quantum ambitions

Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) has announced an initiative to develop the island's first domestically engineered quantum computer by 2027.

The plan, spearheaded by the NSTC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Academia Sinica and research organizations, forms a key part of a broader five-year, $259 million quantum technology strategy initiated in 2022.

Taiwanese researchers are also developing quantum cryptography solutions like quantum key distribution to mitigate potential threats posed by quantum computing advancements. The research emphasis also ensures Taiwan remains at the forefront of digital security.

Taiwan is strategically developing a comprehensive supply chain for quantum computing components, aiming to establish itself as a major player. National research institution Academia Sinica is preparing to trial its 5-qubit chips at various research facilities aiming to improve chipset yield rates, a crucial step towards the mass production of advanced quantum technology.

Emphasizing Taiwan's commitment to global technological collaboration, Taiwanese researchers are engaging with IQM, a Finnish quantum computing hardware company, to establish testing platforms in Taiwan. These discussions not only enhance Taiwan's quantum computing landscape but also foster significant international scientific cooperation.
