Neutral atom quantum computer company Pasqal is collaborating with AI research institute Mila to explore using quantum computing benchmarking and tensor networks to enhance generative AI.

The Canada-based collaboration will also see the organizations assemble a community of researchers and companies involved in quantum machine learning with a longer-term goal of developing quantum-enhanced AI technologies.

An initial one-year research plan will investigate how quantum concepts can work with structured data generation, see if quantum can improve machine learning, and to develop novel generative models.

The organizations identified potential mutual benefits when Pasqal quantum application engineer Slimane Thabet joined Université de Montréal and Mila professor Guillaume Rabusseau’s team as a visiting researcher.

“This collaboration between Mila and Pasqal is an opportunity to explore and advance the intersection between quantum computing and machine learning. Together, we look forward to contributing to the ever-evolving landscape of AI and quantum innovation,” said Rabusseau.

“Boosting machine learning algorithms by quantum shows great potential, and neutral atom quantum computing brings promising ways to find short-term relevant approaches. We really believe that the impressive community of Mila’s ecosystem will contribute to deliver impactful results,” added Pasqal-Canada CEO Raphaël de Thoury.

Industry analysts believe quantum-powered generative AI is one application that will power quantum computing development in 2024, riding on 2023’s generative AI bubble.

Pasqal is also partnering with the  Quantum Transformation Project to use quantum algorithms to optimize routes for low-altitude air traffic.
