Boston Dynamics Humanoid Robot Atlas Retires

Described as the “world’s most dynamic humanoid robot,” Boston Dynamics announced it is time for Atlas to enjoy retirement in a video posted Tuesday.

“For almost a decade, Atlas has sparked our imagination, inspired the next generations of roboticists and leapt over technical barriers in the field. Now it’s time for our hydraulic Atlas robot to kick back and relax,” the video was captioned. “Take a look back at everything we’ve accomplished with the Atlas platform to date.

Just two months ago, Boston Dynamics released a video showing Atlas picking and placing automotive struts, demonstrating its object recognition capabilities and dexterity.

In January, Atlas received a design update that included integrated robotic grippers, allowing it to pick up and handle items. Originally developed as a dynamic humanoid robot that could run,  jump and navigate complex terrains, the robot grippers, along with an array of sensors, allowed it to independently handle items and move them throughout a site.
