Quantum-South releases upgraded quantum-inspired software to calculate how best to load aircraft

Quantum-South has released a new version of its air cargo optimization software that uses quantum-inspired optimization algorithms to determine the optimal loading strategy for packing a consignment into an aircraft.

The software uses quantum algorithms to take into account the multiple interrelated factors that affect optimal loading, such as maximum weight and length, center of gravity, shear and the shape of the fuselage, ensuring compliance with the necessary restrictions. Getting this right enables air cargo companies to maximize loading efficiency, increase profitability and reduce costs.

Quantum-South’s solution offers three main features:

  • Unit load device and pallet load optimization, which optimizes the cargo build-up process using precise dimensions and weight obtained at acceptance. This efficiently uses cargo space and maximizes certain rules like the priority of packages to be transported.

  • Aircraft load optimization that ensures those pallets are placed correctly in the aircraft to best use resources, improve operational efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

  • Fuel optimization, achieved by optimizing the location of the center of mass, resulting in cost savings and environmental benefits.

Quantum-South’s approach can also be customized to meet specific business requirements and restrictions. The software can be integrated into existing operations and works with a wide range of cargo and passenger aircraft models.

Quantum-South plans to expand its quantum software portfolio, targeting optimization solutions for air and maritime cargo operations. The company first applied quantum-inspired algorithms to cargo loading as a finalist in the 2019 Airbus Quantum Computing Challenge.
